A Remarkable Growing Season: Exploring the 2024 Vintage in Paso Robles

Ample winter rainfall, driven by atmospheric rivers and seasonal storms, followed by a cool spring climate and intense summer heat, creates a unique combination of inland warmth and significant maritime influence from the Pacific Ocean. This distinctive climate distinguishes Paso Robles as an exceptional wine-growing region.

Weather Conditions Set the Pace

A wet winter season in Paso Robles wine country brought in a substantial influx of rainfall, nearly surpassing the seasonal average. The rainstorms of late January and early February set the tone for the 2024 growing season, preparing the vineyards for an excellent year ahead.

The first few months of the 2024 growing season experienced slightly cooler high temperatures compared to the same period last year, which was the coolest in over a decade. As a result, bud break occurred towards the end of March. Since then, the vines have thrived under the sunny days of early summer. Thanks to the abundant rainfall over the past two seasons, the vines now boast large, full canopies. These canopies allow the grapes to bask in sunlight, beautifully showcasing the unique terroir of each vineyard site.

Vineyard Management

Throughout the growing season, the team at Serial Wines has carefully managed our vineyards in Paso Robles wine country to ensure optimal grape development. Tasks such as leafing, cluster thinning, and canopy management are performed with precision, informed by decades of experience and a deep understanding of Paso Robles' diverse microclimates.

Our expert Winemaking Team, led by Jeff Kandarian, is committed to producing wines of exceptional quality. Their meticulous attention to detail ensures that each vineyard site achieves its full potential, beautifully reflecting the unique terroir of Paso Robles.

Deseo Estate Highlights

Paso Robles' diverse landscape encompasses various elevations, valleys, and soil compositions, and imparts distinct characteristics to each vineyard. At our Deseo Estate in the Estrella District, we cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, and Syrah. The area's unique climate and soil enhance the flavors and complexity of our wines. With this year's favorable conditions, we anticipate a stunning third vintage from Deseo Estate that truly reflects the exceptional terroir of Paso Robles.

Looking Forward

As we eagerly await the upcoming harvest, all signs point to a vintage that embodies the unique qualities of Paso Robles winemaking. The interplay of abundant winter rains, careful vineyard stewardship, and optimal grape development lays the foundation for wines that authentically express their terroir and the dedication of our team.

Join us as we approach harvest season and raise a glass to the 2024 vintage.

Explore Paso Robles with the NEW Serial White Blend and Serial Red Blend

A photo showcasing two bottles of Serial Wines with labels featuring artistic designs. The bottle on the left, labeled Serial White Blend, depicts a young woman in a foggy landscape. The bottle on the right, labeled Serial Red Blend, features a majestic stag standing in the rain. Both bottles are placed in the stunning Serial Wines Tasting Lounge in Paso Robles.

Paso Robles, a vibrant and diverse wine region, is home to the latest additions from Serial Wines: the 2023 Serial White Blend and the 2021 Serial Red Blend. These new blends, crafted by Serial Winemaker Jeff Kandarian, capture the essence of Paso Robles' terroir, showcasing the region's rich biodiversity and complex flavors. Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or new to the world of Paso Robles wines, these blends offer a delightful journey through one of America’s favorite wine regions.

Discover the Serial White Blend

The 2023 Serial White Blend is a lively and lush wine that brings together some of the best varietals from Paso Robles. At its core is Chardonnay, complemented by Viognier, Clairette Blanche, and Albariño. This combination creates a wine that is refreshingly acidic yet rich, with flavors that linger beautifully on the palate.

The Serial White Blend offers a vibrant bouquet of lemon meringue, white peach, ripe pear, and marmalade, with a delicate touch of marzipan on the finish. Aged on neutral French oak with a hint of lightly-toasted Acacia, the wine's complexity and balance are both gratifying and memorable. Each sip reveals new layers, making it a perfect choice for those who appreciate a well-rounded and nuanced white wine.

Dive into the Serial Red Blend

For red wine lovers, the 2021 Serial Red Blend is a Bordeaux-Rhône style blend that embodies the diverse terroir of Paso Robles. This dynamite blend features Cabernet Sauvignon as its backbone, supported by Petit Sirah, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Grenache. Together, these varietals create a wine that is both powerful and elegant, with a depth and richness.

The Serial Red Blend bursts with flavors of raspberry, strawberry crumble, pomegranate, and vanilla bean, leading into a sumptuous finish with notes of cedar and fresh leather. Aged in a blend of French and American oak, this wine combines explosive fruit flavors with a firm, structured finish, making it a standout choice for any red wine aficionado.

The Art of Serial Wines

The new blends not only stand out for their flavors but also for their unique and evocative labels. Created by London artist Dan Hillier, the labels reflect the complexity and artistry of the wines themselves. The Serial White Blend features a young woman shrouded in fog, symbolizing the cooler microclimates where the grapes were sourced. The Serial Red Blend label depicts a Royal Stag in the rain, representing the regality and fertility of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape.

Serial Wines continues to celebrate the diversity and quality of Paso Robles. Founder and CEO John Anthony Truchard emphasizes the significance of this region on the world-class wine stage, noting the outstanding quality and value that Paso Robles wines offer. The new blends are a testament to this commitment, allowing wine lovers to experience the unique terroir of Paso Robles with each bottle.

Winemaker Jeff Kandarian highlights the partnerships with small growers across the region, which have been integral to crafting these exceptional wines. Exploring the Estrella District—Paso Robles AVA’s Premier Wine Destination

Deseo Vineyard in Paso Robles Estrella Wine District: Rolling hills, lush vines, rustic buildings under clear sky

Nestled in the northeastern corner of Paso Robles AVA lies the Estrella District, a wine-growing region renowned for its exceptional terroir, favorable climate, and diverse grape varieties. Bounded by the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Estrella River, this area boasts a mix of valleys, hills, and plateaus, creating an ideal environment for grape cultivation.

Warm summer days coupled with the cooling breezes and morning fog that flows in from the nearby Pacific Ocean give this area a unique climate that is perfect for growing several grape varietals. Proximity to the Estrella River results in soils rich in alluvial deposits, ranging from light sandy loams to denser, more durable clay loams.

The Estrella District is home to our estate Deseo Vineyard, where our expert vineyard team grows several grape varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Petit Syrah, Syrah, and Tempranillo, producing exceptional estate-grown wines. This journey began with the exquisite Serial Deseo Vineyard Rosé and has recently expanded with the debut of the Serial Deseo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. These ultra-limited wines showcase the high-quality red grape varietals that this region produces.

Delicate and bright—the 2023 Serial Deseo Vineyard Rosé is made with 100% Syrah fruit grown exclusively for rosé production. A light peach hue hints at fragrances of rose petals, white peach, and hibiscus. On the palate, notes of white cherry and tangerine. Luscious mid-palate depth unfolds to a clean finish with hints of marine minerality and white jasmine.

Rich and bold—the inaugural release 2021 Serial Deseo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon presents with a rich, ruby-purple hue foreshadowing aromas of black currant and peppercorn. Explosive flavors of black cherry and vanilla unfold with notes of cigar box. A high-toned finish displays fresh textures and tightly wound tannins that promise to reward careful cellaring.

The Estrella District is also home to the Serial Estrella District Albariño. Complex and aromatic—the 2022 Serial Estrella District Albariño is a beautiful expression of this classic Iberian grape. A deep straw hue in the glass anticipates aromas of white peach and lemon pith with accents of sea spray and white pepper. A crisp palate displaying focused acidity with flavors of nectarine and honeysuckle broadens into a long, persistent finish with hints of minerality.

With each new vintage, Paso Robles wine country continues to be a dynamic source of inspiration. Our ongoing journey focuses on uncovering this region's hidden gems and contributing to its legacy by crafting wines that authentically reflect the richness of the terroir.

Collect and compare these stunning wines from the Estrella District. Also available to taste by the glass, or bottle at the Serial Wines Tasting Lounge in downtown Paso Robles.

An atmospheric river rainstorm in late January and early February is an event to be celebrated by the Paso Robles wine community. Similar to the start of the 2023 season heralded as one of the finest of the past decade, 2024 is showing similarly promising signs.

The diverse landscape of Paso Robles, with its range of elevations, valleys, and soil compositions soaked up the rains,  priming the vineyards. With these conditions, we anticipate a stunning third vintage from our Deseo Estate in the Estrella District, where Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, and Syrah.

With heavy rainfall also comes the potential risk of erosion and vine damage. However, meticulous preparation has been taken by our Vineyard Management  team to ensure vine integrity. Working with Mother Nature to capitalize on her bounty and minimize her threats is the secrte to growing thr best possible wines in this region.

This upcoming vintage promises exceptional quality across Serial's portfolio, highlighting the distinctive characteristics of each varietal and terroir. Unveiling the Distinctive Terroir of Paso Robles' Southern Frontier—Santa Margarita Ranch AVA

Located along the southern boundary of the expansive Paso Robles AVA lies Santa Margarita Ranch AVA, a hidden gem district that boasts a diverse blend of microclimates and pristine vineyard landscapes. Bordered by the Santa Lucia Mountain Range, this AVA spans over 18,300 acres and stands alone, unbordered by the other ten Paso Robles districts.

Santa Margarita Ranch sits in a valley surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges. The orographic effects from this mountainous terrain result in increased rainfall and diurnal temperature swings, as well as limit the maritime influence from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Out of the 11 Paso Robles districts, Santa Margarita Ranch stands out as a true viticultural haven, where soil, climate, and skilled winemaking create an unparalleled environment for cultivating exceptional wines. Santa Margarita Ranch is home to two stunning Serial Wines red wines—Serial Santa Margarita Ranch Red Blend and Serial Santa Margarita Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon.

Elegant and graceful—the 2020 Serial Santa Margarita Ranch Red Blend displays qualities reflective of the lush landscape of Santa Margarita Ranch. Deep purple and garnet hues anticipate aromas of black raspberry, mocha, and pencil shaving. The palate has layered flavors of pluot, currant, and coffee bean. The finish has soft edges and definitive weight.

The 2020 Serial Santa Margarita Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the same district and has its own distinctive characteristics that exemplify the excellent reds that this region produces. Aromas of wild berries, huckleberry, and savory jam reveal hints of earthy cedar and black licorice. The mouthfeel is commanding and enveloping, unfolding with complex flavors of black cherry, cassis, pomegranate, and graphite. With upfront energy that lengthens into a deep, bold, structured finish.

In our continuous exploration of Paso Robles, we strive to craft wines that encapsulate the true spirit of its terroir, taking advantage of the unique characteristics that this region offers. Discover the beauty of Santa Margarita Ranch by collecting these two stunning varietals. Available to taste by the glass or bottle at the Serial Tasting Lounge in Downtown Paso Robles.

Serial Adelaida District Cabernet Sauvignon—A Testament of Terroir

As we continue to plant our roots in the expansive and diverse terroir of Paso Robles, we discover hidden-gem vineyards tucked away within the intricate landscape of AVAs and sub-AVAs. Each of these unique vineyards tells a story through soil composition, nuances of its microclimate, and geographical features. It's an exploration that goes beyond cultivation; it's a quest to understand and harness the full potential of Paso Robles' diverse terroir.

Exploring the remarkable terroir of the Adelaida District started with Serial Adelaida District Cabernet Sauvignon. Bold and expressive by nature, Cabernet Sauvignon excels in Paso Robles in the steep limestone hillsides of the Adelaida District, where Bordeaux grapes thrive.

With an annual rainfall of over 30 inches, this region stands as the wettest in Paso Robles. Unlike many other wine regions, the unique limestone rich soil of Adelaida retains water throughout the warm, sun-soaked summer months. These warm days, followed by the cooling effects of the Templeton Gap in the evening allows this incomparable region to produce exceptional grapes that retain both vibrancy and freshness.

The 2019 and 2020 vintages of our Serial Adelaida District Cabernet Sauvignon are a clear reflection of the quality of the Adelaida District, coming from the westside coastal mountain slopes with rich, calcareous soil, and influence from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Powerful and voluminous— the new release 2020 Serial Adelaida District Cabernet Sauvignon displays unique qualities indicative of the rich Adelaida landscape. A deep ruby-hued wine with aromas of Morello cherry and cola. The mouthfeel is round with flavors of forest berry and dark mint chocolate. Fine tension in combination with Paso Robles richness to create an approachable wine with a powerful finish.

Its predecessor, the 2019 Serial Adelaida District Cabernet Sauvignon has its own  unique qualities. Dark, ruby hues signal the intense black currant and black cherry aromas. Flavors of cassis and fig, with hints of dark chocolate and graphite are supported by velvety tannins. A powerful vintage and substantial expression of the Cabernet varietal.

Paso Robles wine country continues to be a dynamic source of inspiration and a canvas of possibilities. Through our ongoing journey, we aim not only to uncover the hidden gems within this region but also to contribute to the legacy of Paso Robles by creating wines that capture the essence of its terroir and showcase the unparalleled richness it has to offer.

Collect and compare Serial Adelaida District Cabernet Sauvignon with these two consecutive but distinct vintages. Also available to taste by the glass, or bottle at the Serial Wines Tasting Lounge in Downtown Paso Robles.

This fall, we unveil the triumphs of vintages past while eagerly anticipating the 2023 wines to come.

Serial Wines’ new Fall Release collection features our most ambitious and coveted wines to date, including the inaugural 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon from our estate Deseo Vineyard in the Estrella District. Other standouts include a trio of wines from the famed Adelaida District, including the 2020 Serial Halter Ranch Adelaida District Syrah. See the entire collection here.

Collectively, the Fall Release deepens our journey into the multifaceted terroirs and flavors of Paso Robles. Each of these wines is in high demand with limited production. They are available for a short time at the Serial Tasting Lounge in downtown Paso Robles. Select releases are also available online.

2023 Harvest: First Fruits

Meantime, the 2023 harvest season is finally coming on strong in Paso Robles. An unusually wet winter was followed by moderate spring and summer conditions. Whereas the previous harvest was kicked into high gear early with hot weather in September, the pace of this year’s harvest has been slow and steady. Fall officially began on a mild note with temperatures from the high 70s to mid-80s—perfect for nurturing the fruit to a ripe and rewarding conclusion.

“A long, slow ripening curve like this typically provides excellent physiological ripeness in the fruit, with the flavors, phenolics, and acidity all coming together nicely,” says Sander Scheer, Serial Wines’ director of vineyard operations.

The first fruits of the 2023 harvest season were picked at Deseo Vineyard in early September—specifically Syrah for rosé production. Select lots of Chardonnay followed in the third week of September. Now, however, the harvest is in full swing. We expect to wrap up the season in late October or early November with our last picks of Cabernet Sauvignon.
